There are a lot of internet fashion trends going around. Anytime a celebrity steps out in a new look…trend. Anytime a royal family member shows up in public…trend. Anytime a former Bachelor or Bachelorette contestant starts a new fashion endorsement campaign on instagram…trend. Influencers have a lot to say about the “looks” that become the seasons trends, and while I generally ignore most of what crosses my social media in favor of my own closet, there’s one instagram “look” that finally drew me in.
Puravida bracelets cross my instagram feed on the daily, and I originally liked them for their simple, colorful design that easily coordinated with any outfit and lifestyle. I finally got pulled into their website one afternoon by a picture of their ‘Dreaming out loud’ pack which featured a bracelet with a sunflower charm that reminded me of my sister! I ended up browsing for quite a while, and was generally impressed by the company and their story.
On a trip to Costa Rica, the companies founders met two local artisans making bracelets in a small impoverished village. Seeing an opportunity to support the local trade and take back a unique product to their hometown of San Diego, they bought 400 bracelets and brought them home to distribute in small boutique shops. They sold out in a matter of days, and a new humanitarian business venture was formed.
“Pura Vida” means ‘pure life’ a Costa Rican philosophy meant to inspire appreciation in life’s simple beauty and treasures. This became the founding principle behind the company as well. Today, Puravida bracelets help support over 200 artisans around the world by providing full time job opportunities in their local communities. Additionally, Puravida has partnered with over 30 charities to create special, handcrafted bracelets in support of causes ranging from mental health, to environmental concerns, to cancer and other diseases. And it was this charity component that drew me in the most.
This summer, my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer, and while it’s a generally helpless feeling to watch someone you care about go through something as gut wrenching as cancer, it also leaves you looking for any way, no matter how small to support them in their fight. One of the charities that Puravida partnered with is Boarding for Breast Cancer, a non profit organization that supports healthy active lifestyles and early detection, particularly among young people, as the best means for cancer survivorship. They’ve raised millions of dollars for national organizations including the Breast Cancer Foundation and the Susan G. Koman Foundation, and hosts nature and wellness retreats for breast cancer patients and survivors around the country.
The Boarding for Breast Cancer, and breast cancer braid bracelets were all I needed to find to place my first Puravida order, and I’m also currently on the wait list for the “Hustle Kindness” bracelet which supports Peach’s Neet Feet, an organization that celebrates children through the arts, and brings together communities and families with a message of selflessness, kindness, and purposeful living.
Remember a decade ago when LIVESTRONG bracelets were all the rage, and you paid $10 to look like Lance Armstrong? Well, Puravida bracelets not only allow you to pick the causes that you support, they’re also more fashionable than those yellow rubber bands! In fact, if you can’t find a cause you’d support, they also have plenty of fashion forward products that you can still feel good about because your purchase supports those artisans around the world that handcraft each, unique piece.
If I sound like I’m selling something, I’m not! I carry no inventory of the product. I haven’t bought into any pyramid scheme where I’m now selling bracelets out of my home! There’s no hard sell here at all. If you’re an instagram follower, you’ll likely see Puravida cropping up on my feed a bit more in the next month or so. Because October is breast cancer awareness month, I’m repping my braid for breast cancer through September and October. What does “repping” mean? Well it means I’ll take some pictures on instagram, and as a return, anyone I connect with who wants to make a Puravida purchase can use code KATELAACK20 at checkout to take 20% off their order. The code applies to all purchases, not just the breast cancer awareness bracelets.
One more time…here are your nitty-gritties:
