Wine for your weekend – Katherine Goldschmidt Cabernet Sauvignon

Two years ago, “Josh” wines showed up at our local liquor store. With a husband named Josh, they quickly became a staple on our wine rack. I bought our first bottle or two because I thought it was cute. People gifted him bottles because they thought it was clever. And then the distribution of “Josh” wines exploded around our area, so it was just always convenient to grab a bottle if we were in a hurry or on our way somewhere.

It was a big perk that the wine was actually pretty good and we enjoyed drinking it!

Last week, a bottle of “Katherine” wine showed up on our wine rack. I don’t remember purchasing and putting it there. I’m relatively certain it was gifted to us when our friends stayed for the marathon, and handed it off to Josh who shelved it for a later day. As it happened, the later day was just a few days after we’d finished a bottle of Josh Cabernet Sauvignon. So for just a moment, we had all the namesake wines going on on the counter!

It was that good…or maybe we were just in that much of a wine drinking mood. It likely helped that we a fire going in the patio pit, the bistro lights on, and the weather was absolutely, spot on, perfect!

We decanted the wine for about 30 minutes before the first pour. The wine was a beautiful deep purple/red color. The kind of wine I’d actually comment about looking “pretty” as it was poured into the decanter. Strong aromas of cherry and tart berries are present on the nose, and it presented as fruity without being sweet or sugary.

A very full bodied with lots of juicy fruit flavors, there’s a hint of oakiness and smokiness on the finish that is smooth and not bitey. At 14.5% alcohol, you’ll feel a good wine buzz if you get through the bottle, which is exactly the kind of mood we were in for this, the start of summer. We paired it with lasagna and a lot of backyard ambiance! It’d be great for a cookout, the smokiness pairing well with a good char from the grill.

Versatile and a crowd pleaser, Katherine Goldschmidt is a great option for all of this weekend’s shenanigans!
