Wine for your Weekend: Valentine’s Day edition

Happy Valentine’s Day!

The year that Josh and I met, Valentine’s Day was on a Friday. As we were dating long distance at the time, this was very fortuitous as it was the only way that we probably would have planned to go out. I drove to Rochester; Josh made dinner reservations.

We ended up packed in a restaurant downtown at a small table side by side with another couple. Josh pulled out a deck of cards while we waited for our appetizer to come. I thought it was funny that he thought we’d have to wait so long for our food on Valentine’s Day that he brought cards to keep us entertained.

He proceeded to start doing magic tricks at the table, much to the amusement of the couples on either side of us and myself.

We went home and opened a bottle of wine, climbed into bed, and…

…watched a Nicholas Sparks movie. (Relax, this is all PG 😂)

The next year, Fifty Shades of Grey came to theaters…Josh and I stayed home, opened a bottle of wine, and…watched a Nicholas Sparks movie.

We’ve had five Valentine’s Days together, and watched five Nicholas Sparks movies.

Watching a Nicholas Sparks movie is not a code phrase (like my friend who “makes muffins” routinely with her husband). It’s really what we do on Valentine’s Day, and it’s really much more fun if you watch them in bed with a glass of wine.

So if you need Valentine’s Day plans (single or coupled up, it works either way!), I highly recommend comfy pjs, Nicholas Sparks, and a glass of wine. It’s been our sure fire winner!

And for a wine that’s a winner for your Valentine’s Day…night…

Image result for Edmeades Zinfandel

Edmeades 2013 Zinfandel (Mendocino County) is a medium bodied red with all the fruity, jaminess of a zinfandel, without being overly heavy. Described by wine enthusiast as a “good time” wine, it’s food friendly, it’s got just a bit more acid and is a touch dryer than you might expect from a fuller bodied red. As such, it would be an indulgent pick to pair with a rich dessert or chocolate covered strawberries, as the fruit flavors would be complimentary, while the dryness of the wine would help cut through heavy chocolate or cream flavors. I tend to think this is the perfect hot fudge sundae wine pairing.

At 15% abv, Edmeades is a good candidate if you’re looking for a little red wine buzz to end your Valentine’s Day. And as many wine stores previously carrying the 2013 vintage are now rotating that out for the more recently released 2015 and 2016 vintages, you may also find it easy to score a Valentine’s Day deal. Average retail for a bottle ranges between $14-$20, but we found the last three remaining bottles of the 2013 vintage at our local liquor store for just $8.

So pop the cork, pop on a Nicholas Sparks movie, and enjoy yourself a Valentine’s Day! Whether you’ve got a special someone to share it with, or you’re flying solo, you can always celebrate wine o’clock!

Cheers!
